history

background

In the German Racing Championship (DRM) in 1983 the group 5 and group 6 racing cars were replaced by group C racing cars. Since the Group C sports car prototypes were very expensive to buy and maintain, the starting field for the racing season was reduced to 13 vehicles, most of which competed with factory support. As the number of participants decreased, so did the number of viewers for this racing series.

In contrast, the number of visitors to the races of the German Racing Trophy increased. There, close-to-production Group A touring cars from many brands started in large fields with growing popularity.

To counteract this trend, the ONS created a "Concept for the Restoration of German Motorsport" in 1983. It described the German Production Car Championship (DPM), which took place parallel to the DRM and was based on the French production car series in terms of the regulations. The concept was implemented as early as 1984 and the first DPM season was held.

Regulations

In contrast to the DRM, in which racing cars were divided into different classes or divisions depending on the cubic capacity, the ONS established a handicap system for the DPM. Equal opportunities ( balance of performance ) should be achieved for all vehicles .

This was made possible by regulating the weights and tire widths depending on the cubic capacity.

Displacement 1600 cc 2000 cc 2500 cc 3000 cc 4000 cc > 4000 cm³
Min. Weight 750 kg 880 kg 960 kg 1165 kg 1365 kg 1425 kg
Max. Tire width 9 ″ (23 cm) 10 ″ (25 cm) 10 ″ (25 cm) 10 ″ (25 cm) 11 ″ (28 cm) 11 ″ (28 cm)

Vehicles with three or four valve engines received an additional weight of 70 kg. If the vehicles were too strong, up to 120 kg could be added or the tire widths could be reduced. For environmental reasons, the ONS also specified a noise limit of a maximum of 100 dBA for the racing cars.
