2020 season>

The 2019 DTM season was the 33rd DTM season and the 20th since the series was re-established in 2000. It began on May 3, 2019 in Hockenheim and ended on October 6 at the same place. The season consisted of 18 races on nine race weekends as well as two other races, which were held in November together with the Japanese Super GT , and was organized by the German Motor Sport Association and the ITR .

The 2018 DTM champion, Briton Gary Paffett , no longer competed in the series in 2019 and was thus unable to defend his title. The same was true for the winners in the team and manufacturers' championships, HWA and Mercedes-Benz . René Rast , runner-up in 2018, started the 2019 season as the best-placed driver of the previous year. As the third manufacturer alongside Audi and BMW , Aston Martin took part in the DTM in 2019 instead of Mercedes . In addition, Honda , Lexus and Nissan were part of the season finale in Hockenheim as part of a guest start with one vehicle each.

After 16 of 18 races, René Rast prematurely won his second championship title in the DTM after 2017. Audi secured victory in the brand classification. The teams' championship was won by Audi Sport Team Rosberg .

Changes in 2019

Race tracks and regulations

The number of races was reduced from 20 to 18 on nine race weekends for the 2019 season. The events in Zandvoort , the Red Bull Ring and the Hungaroring have been removed from the racing calendar. On the other hand, the TT Circuit Assen was added , and the DTM made a guest appearance at the Circuit Zolder for the first time since 2002 .

Compared to previous years, the number of free practice sessions on each race weekend was reduced from three to two on Friday. These had a duration of 45 and 30 minutes, respectively, after which a further five minutes were available for starting exercises . All races started at 1.30 p.m. local time , the night races in Misano , which were held for the first time last year, were canceled, while the track itself remained part of the calendar. A number of laps was set for the races at the start of the season, based on a race duration of 58 minutes. Before that, all races had a time of 55 minutes followed by another lap, so the exact number of laps was not determined. Each race had a maximum duration of 70 minutes. Laps neutralized by the safety car were added to the previously determined distance; the maximum number of racing laps to be added was three. These changes were partially withdrawn after the first race weekend at Hockenheim and they returned to the previous format with 55 minutes to drive and one more lap. However, the race director could still add up to two laps completed under safety car conditions. This reversal was done in order to do justice to the partly shorter transmission time of the TV partner Sat.1 after the races compared to 2018 . Only the best four vehicles per brand in each race were evaluated for the manufacturers' classification. This change was necessary due to the different number of vehicles used by the manufacturers.

The weight of the vehicles without that of the driver and the fuel was reduced from 1031 to 986 kilograms . As a result of the Class 1 regulations that arose from the cooperation between the DTM and the Japanese Super GT , four - cylinder turbo engines with a displacement of two liters were used for the first time in 2019 instead of the previous eight - cylinder naturally aspirated engines . These had an output of around 620  horsepower and speeds of more than 300  kilometers per hour were possible. In the area of aerodynamics, in addition to new diffusers at the front and rear of the vehicles, underbodies and rear wings based on those of the Japanese Super GT vehicles were used. The mode of use of the drag reduction system , which has been in use since 2013, has been adapted; a driver now had to be less than three seconds away from the vehicle in front to be able to use it. In the last five laps of a race, use was permitted for all participants, with the exception of the leader, regardless of this distance. With the newly introduced push-to-pass function, it was possible to briefly increase the engine output by 30 horsepower. The function was allowed to be used a maximum of twelve times per race, otherwise the same rules apply as for the drag reduction system. The parking brake previously used at the start has been dispensed with. The so-called firewall shielded the interior of the vehicles behind the driver and was intended to protect them from the dangers of accidents. The inside mirror was replaced by a reversing system.

The aim of the joint regulations is to make both series attractive to new manufacturers at low cost. From 2020 the Super GT will also drive according to the Class 1 regulations . Already at the end of 2019 there will be joint races of the DTM and the Super GT, which will be held at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg and the Fuji Speedway . There was initially a guest start of three vehicles from the Japanese series at the DTM season finale in Hockenheim from October 4th to 6th, 2019. One of these vehicles was sent by the manufacturers of the Super GT - Honda , Lexus and Nissan  .

“We are thus offering the DTM fans a real highlight at the end of the season. Six brands on the grid for a DTM race - simply impressive. This is proof of the enormous potential of the cooperation between the Super GT and DTM. "

- Achim Kostron, Managing Director of ITR : DTM.com, March 29, 2019

A joint event for both racing series will take place in Fuji on November 23 and 24, 2019. As in the DTM, but unlike the Super GT, this will include two races without refueling during the pit stops and without a driver change .

Manufacturers, teams and drivers

In July 2017, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would be leaving the series at the end of the 2018 DTM season in order to take part in the FIA Formula E championship from 2019 in addition to its ongoing commitment as a designer and team in the Formula 1 World Championship . The British sports car manufacturer Aston Martin entered the DTM in 2019 as the third manufacturer alongside Audi and BMW . However, it was initially unclear in which race Aston Martin's debut would take place. With the departure of Mercedes-Benz, the Mercedes works team HWA also withdrew from the DTM for the 2019 season, which, however, now competed in the 2018/19 FIA Formula E championship . Team R-Motorsport , based in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen , took part in the series as a team for Aston Martin . The team cooperated in a joint venture with HWA, which was responsible for the development and use of the vehicles. In addition, the Belgian W Racing Team, as WRT Team Audi Sport, used two non-factory-supported customer vehicles for Audi.

The two-time DTM champion and defending champion of the 2018 season Gary Paffett switched to the FIA Formula E championship for the 2018/19 season , in which he competed for HWA - as he did recently in the DTM. Daniel Juncadella , who, unlike Paffett, was only used as a test and reserve driver for HWA in Formula E , initially took the same step . On February 19, 2019, it was announced that Juncadella would also remain in the DTM for R-Motorsport. With Edoardo Mortara and Pascal Wehrlein , two more former Mercedes DTM drivers started in the electric racing series in 2018/19. Mortara had already completed a season in Formula E for the Venturi Formula E team in 2017/18 parallel to his DTM commitment , for which he also competed in 2018/19. At the same time, he remained a Mercedes works driver. Wehrlein, on the other hand, left the manufacturer and drove for Mahindra Racing . Lucas Auer also returned to monoposto racing and switched to B-Max Racing in Super Formula .

On the BMW side, Augusto Farfus , who was part of BMW Team RMG in the preseason , left the DTM after seven years, worked in the manufacturer's GT program in 2019 and competed for the BRC Racing Team in the World Touring Car Cup . On the other hand, Sheldon van der Linde joined the company . He started for BMW Team RBM , replacing Bruno Spengler , who in turn changed to RMG as a replacement for Farfus within the BMW team. Jonathan Aberdein drove for the new WRT Team Audi Sport . He and van der Linde were the first South African drivers in the history of the racing series. But your teammate was Pietro Fittipaldi . At 21 and 22 respectively, the two formed the youngest driver pairing on a team this season. Since Fittipaldi was both test and reserve driver for the Haas F1 Team in the Formula 1 World Championship and was to be used in this role at the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix , he was replaced by former motorcycle world champion Andrea at the race weekend in Misano Dovizioso represented in the WRT Team Audi Sport. Because Jamie Green from Audi Sport Team Rosberg was unable to attend this weekend due to appendicitis , he was replaced by Fittipaldi, who is now not needed in Canada.

Paul di Resta was the only former Mercedes driver alongside Juncadella to keep the DTM at R-Motorsport. Di Resta's compatriot Jake Dennis was signed as the third driver of the team . Together with Juncadella, Ferdinand von Habsburg was confirmed as the fourth driver on February 19, 2019 . At the beginning of September, the former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button announced that he would start as a guest driver for Honda in both races of the season finale in Hockenheim. At Lexus and Nissan, however, two drivers took turns at the wheel over the weekend; for Lexus these were Ryō Hirakawa and Nick Cassidy , for Nissan Tsugio Matsuda and Ronnie Quintarelli .

Without guest starters, the field of participants comprised 18 vehicles. As in previous years, all teams used tires from Hankook Tire . As the team classification could only include the results of two vehicles per team, Timo Glock and Philipp Eng drove for the BMW Team RMR, which was jointly managed by Reinhold Motorsport and Racing Bart Mampaey . At Aston Martin there was the R-Motorsport 1 team , consisting of Paul di Resta and Jake Dennis , and R-Motorsport 2 , to which Daniel Juncadella and Ferdinand von Habsburg belonged. The following table gives an overview of which drivers competed in which team in the 2019 DTM season. First, the established teams are listed in the order of the team rating from the previous year. This is followed by the newly entered teams and the Japanese GT teams in alphabetical order.

Season preparation

The first test drives with the vehicles for the 2019 season took place between November 12 and 14, 2018 in Estoril , Portugal . Nico Müller , René Rast and Mike Rockenfeller competed for Audi, and Bruno Spengler and Marco Wittmann tested for BMW . Aston Martin has not yet participated in these tests. For the first time, the British took to the track with Jake Dennis and Paul di Resta in the tests in Jerez de la Frontera in early March 2019 . Müller and Rast drove there for Audi, Timo Glock and Spengler for BMW . From March 27 to 29, 2019, Dennis, Ferdinand von Habsburg and Daniel Juncadella completed three more test days for Aston Martin in Estoril.

The official ITR test drives took place from April 15 to 18, 2019 at the Lausitzring . Audi was there with nine, BMW with three and Aston Martin with two vehicles, which were also used in a rollout that took place on Sunday. However, each team was only allowed to use one vehicle during the test drives, so Audi had four, BMW three and Aston Martin two vehicles.

There was a triple guided tour for Audi on the first day of the test. Mike Rockenfeller set the fastest lap in 1: 35.190 minutes ahead of Jamie Green and Nico Müller. The test lasted six hours and was interrupted as planned by a three-hour break. On April 16, the Audi drivers were able to confirm the performance of the previous day: Loïc Duval set the fastest lap in 1: 36.130 minutes. He was followed by René Rast and Robin Frijns in second and third. On that day, all three had taken over the vehicles from their respective teammates at Phoenix (Duval), Rosberg (Rast) and Abt (Frijns). BMW struggled with technical difficulties: Spengler was only able to drive one lap that was not timed and Joel Eriksson completed only 14 laps due to electronic problems. The test lasted five hours and 40 minutes. The third day was also dominated by Audi vehicles at the top of the ranking. With a time of 1: 35.169 minutes, Frijns was fastest ahead of Rast and Rockenfeller. Frijns also undercut Rockenfeller's record on Monday. Compared to the first two days, the pilots sometimes took turns at the wheel given the eleven hours of testing. On the fourth day, eleven hours of testing were also available. Müller drove the fastest lap in 1: 35.681 minutes ahead of Green and Duval. This means that at least three Audi drivers formed the front of the field on the fourth day of testing.

In total, the 18 drivers covered 3921 laps over the four days, which corresponds to a distance of 17,777.814 kilometers. Robin Frijns set the fastest lap on Wednesday, while Sheldon van der Linde completed the longest distance with 348 laps. Audi seemed to have an advantage over its competitors in terms of reliability and speed. Aston Martin driver Jake Dennis commented to Motorsport-Total.com : “When it comes to the racing pace, we can definitely keep up with Audi, if we are not even better.” René Rast saw it similarly: “They watched from Jerez made the right step here. After the first test in Jerez it didn't look like it, but suddenly they are really strong here. ”BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt drew a mixed conclusion on the first two days of the brand's technical problems.

The driver's title of the 2019 DTM season was prematurely won by the German René Rast in the third last race of the season at the Nürburgring . He had taken the overall lead in the fifth race at Misano and did not give it up until the end of the year. For Rast, in his third full season in the series, it was the second title after a few starts in 2016, after becoming champion for the first time in 2017 and only marginally inferior to Gary Paffett from the United Kingdom the previous year . It was also the second driver title for his Audi Sport Team Rosberg after 2017. For the ninth time since the series was re-established in 2000, the master driver drove a vehicle from Audi . This left Mercedes-Benz (eight drivers' titles) behind in these statistics. Rast's brand colleague Nico Müller was runner-up . The Swiss , who drove for the Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline , achieved his best overall result in his sixth DTM season. Previously, this was ninth in the 2016 season. Third place in the drivers' standings was the German Marco Wittmann from BMW Team RMG , overall winner in 2014 and 2016, and this year the best-placed BMW driver. With the Briton Jamie Green as the second driver, Audi Sport Team Rosberg also secured its second title in the team championship prematurely after 2017 in the penultimate race of the season. The other two Audi works teams, Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline and Audi Sport, followed in this classification Team Phoenix , on ranks two and three. Audi had previously set a record when it won the brand championship in the 14th of the 18 races of the season at the Lausitzring . It was the seventh brand name for Audi. BMW and Aston Martin followed in the places.

In addition to the overall victory, René Rast was also able to record seven daily victories. He set his personal best from the previous year. Only Laurent Aïello could win more races within one season in 2002. Rast also won 17 races from the last three years. In addition, Marco Wittmann (four wins) and Nico Müller (three) won several races. Philipp Eng achieved his first DTM victory in Zolder on Saturday. The winners of the other races were Bruno Spengler , Mike Rockenfeller and Jamie Green. It was the first victory for all three since 2017. Rast started the race most often from the front starting position with eight pole positions , while Eng achieved the fastest race laps with five . The Aston Martin drivers were unable to achieve any podium positions during the season. The best results were two sixth places for Jake Dennis in Zolder's Sunday race and Daniel Juncadella in Nuremberg's Saturday race . Juncadella was the brand's best-placed driver in the final ranking with 23 points in 14th place. The teams from R-Motorsport took the last places in the respective ranking. So they were still behind the only customer team of the season, the WRT Team Audi Sport , whose best results were achieved by Jonathan Aberdein , who was fourth in the Sunday race at Assen and Saturday at the Nürburgring. He also started from the front row several times, but neither he nor his team-mate Pietro Fittipaldi was able to achieve a podium finish throughout the year.

Marco Wittmann , who started from pole position , scored the twelfth victory of his career in the DTM in the race, which was characterized by the wet and rainy track, ahead of Mike Rockenfeller and Robin Frijns . He led the race from start to finish. The fastest lap went Timo Glock in 1: 42.469 minutes. Daniel Juncadella scored the first points in the DTM for Aston Martin in ninth place , and Paul di Resta was able to score another point for the debut manufacturer with third place in qualifying.

Wittmann interrupted René Rast's winning streak, which had lasted six races, and took the lead in the drivers' championship. In the team standings, BMW Team RMG led the manufacturers, BMW.

On Sunday, May 5, 2019, a distance of 37 laps, i.e. 169.238 kilometers, was completed in the second race of the season.

René Rast won the race. For him it was the eleventh victory in the DTM and the seventh in the last eight races across all seasons. Behind him, the duo from the Abt Sportsline team crossed the finish line: Nico Müller finished second, Robin Frijns third like the day before. This meant that three Audi drivers were in the first three places. Philipp Eng , who started from pole position, achieved fourth place. In his second DTM race, Pietro Fittipaldi set the fastest race lap for the first time in 1: 30.401 minutes . It was also the first fastest race lap in the racing series for his WRT Team Audi Sport .

On May 18, 2019, the first DTM race on Circuit Zolder since May 5, 2002 took place. It went over 39 laps of 4.011 kilometers , a total of 156.429 kilometers.

Philipp Eng won the race. It was his first victory in the DTM in the 23rd race. He was followed by Joel Eriksson and Nico Müller in second and third place. Pole setter Marco Wittmann crossed the finish line in seventh place. He had been in second place behind Bruno Spengler and ahead of René Rast for a long time before the field was mixed up by a safety car phase . This gave drivers who had previously completed their mandatory pit stop , such as Eng, an advantage. The leaders up to then fell behind, however: In addition to Wittmann's seventh place, Spengler was tenth, Rast had to retire after 27 laps due to an engine failure. The fastest lap went in 1: 23.751 minutes Robin Frijns .

With regard to the overall lead, there was no change in any of the three ratings.

The race on Sunday, like the one on Saturday, ran over 39 laps, i.e. 156.429 kilometers.

In qualifying, Sheldon van der Linde achieved his first pole position in the DTM. In the race that René Rast won ahead of Philipp Eng and Jamie Green , he finished fifth. Eng drove the fastest race lap in 1: 23.600 minutes. The best Aston Martin driver was Jake Dennis in sixth. However, the points obtained from this were not included in the brand classification, as Aston Martin had exceeded the maximum quota of six engines for four vehicles during the season. In such cases, the regulations stipulate that the result of the best-placed driver of the manufacturer concerned in the next race will not be taken into account for the brand classification.

With second place, Eng took the lead in the drivers' championship. Wittmann fell back to third place behind Rast. In the team standings, the Rosberg team from Rast and Green was now in front, while Audi stayed ahead among the manufacturers.

For the second time after 2018, the DTM made a guest appearance at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli from June 7th to 9th, 2019 . The first race on June 8, 2019 led over 39 laps, each 4.226 kilometers , for a total distance of 164.814 kilometers.

Marco Wittmann , starting from last place on the grid, scored his second win of the season, followed by pole setter René Rast and Loïc Duval . Wittmann benefited from his strategy of completing the mandatory pit stop after the first lap and a safety car phase that was triggered on lap four after Joel Eriksson had parked his BMW due to a defect. The fastest race lap went to Philipp Eng for the second time in a row with a time of 1: 27.991 minutes .

With pole position and second place, Rast took the overall lead in the drivers' championship. In the team classification, too, there was a change in leadership from Audi Sport Team Rosberg to BMW Team RMG . Audi remained in the front in the brand classification.

The Sunday race, which was one lap shorter than the previous day, covered a distance of 160.588 kilometers.

In qualifying, as on Saturday, René Rast achieved pole position, from which he drove to third place and thus his third podium in a row and the fourth of the season. Nico Müller won the race ahead of Philipp Eng . For Müller it was the second race win in the DTM after his maiden win on June 26, 2016 at the Norisring . He also ended the series of his team Abt Sportsline of 28 previously winless championship races. Müller's team-mate Robin Frijns achieved the fastest race lap in 1: 27.291 minutes.

René Rast and Audi stayed ahead in the drivers 'and brands' championships. The lead in the team standings was now again with the Rosberg team.

On July 6, 2019, the first of two races was held on the season's only street circuit , the Norisring . It led over 69 laps of 2.3 kilometers , for a total of 158.7 kilometers.

Despite a bad start, René Rast clinched his third win of the season. He benefited from a safety car phase from the fourth lap on, as he had already completed his mandatory pit stop at this point. It was also his fourth consecutive podium result. Also on the podium were Nico Müller , who started from pole position, in second place and Joel Eriksson in third. Müller also achieved the fastest race lap in 46.337 seconds .

Rast extended his lead in the drivers' standings. Among the teams and manufacturers, the Rosberg and Audi teams also stayed in front.

The race on Sunday was one lap longer, covering 70 laps and 161 kilometers.

In qualifying, overall leader René Rast achieved his third pole position from the past four races. In the first lap there was contact between him and Nico Müller. As a result, Rast and subsequently also Müller fell back because of a drive-through penalty received for causing the collision . The two ultimately came in seventh and eighth. Bruno Spengler won the race . It was his 16th race win in the DTM and the first since 2017, when he was also able to win at the Norisring. Jamie Green and Mike Rockenfeller, who returned this weekend after a forced break due to illness, completed the podium in second and third place. As on the day before, Müller drove the fastest race lap, this time in 46.618 seconds.

Rast, the Rosberg team and Audi respectively stayed in front in the three ratings.
