Sheldon van der Linde (born May 13, 1999 in Johannesburg ) is a South African racing driver . In 2019 he started for BMW in the DTM .

Career

Sheldon van der Linde is the grandson of Hennie and the son of Shaun , both of whom were also racing drivers. Like his three years older brother Kelvin , he started karting at the age of six . In 2014 he took part in the South African version of the Polo Cup and was the overall winner at the age of 15. In 2016 he drove a vehicle in the Audi Sport TT Cup . With four wins of the season, pole positions and fastest laps each , he finished fourth in the overall standings.

In 2017 he drove in the ADAC TCR Germany and reached third place in this series. In addition, this year he took part in the Petit Le Mans for Land Motorsport together with Christopher Mies and Connor De Phillippi and achieved overall victory in the GTD class. In the overall standings of all classes they finished 16th. In the 2018 season he drove in two racing series in parallel: On the one hand, he and his brother drove an Audi R8 LMS for Land Motorsport in the ADAC GT Masters . At the end of the year they were tied with two races at the Sachsen- and Hockenheimring and a total of six podium places in second place in the drivers' standings. He was also 23rd in the Blancpain GT Series for the W Racing Team .

In 2019 van der Linde started in the DTM , where he was behind the wheel of a BMW for Racing Bart Mampaey . Besides Jonathan Aberdein, he was the first South African driver in the history of the racing series. At Mampaey he replaced the former DTM champion Bruno Spengler , who switched to Reinhold Motorsport . In his first race at Hockenheim he scored his first points straight away, finishing sixth. In qualifying for the Sunday race in Zolder , he achieved his first pole position in the DTM and fifth in the race. Overall, he was able to place in eight of the 18 races in the points, his best result was fifth place from Zolder. With 42 points, he reached 13th place in the drivers' championship at the end of the season.
