The BMW M4 DTM is a prototype racing car from the German automobile manufacturer BMW , which was designed for exclusive use in the DTM and has been competing there since 2014 . The M4 DTM replaced the since 2012 used M3 DTM from.

technology

Like all DTM racing cars since 2012, the BMW M4 DTM is based on a standardized monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) with an integrated 120-liter fuel tank and roll cage made of steel. The external appearance, on the other hand, is based on a production vehicle from the respective manufacturer; in the case of the BMW M4 DTM, it is the BMW F82 .

The racing car was powered by a BMW P66 -called naturally aspirated V8 engine with four liters, whose power around 353 kW (480 hp) is and delivers a maximum torque of 500 Nm. The M4 DTM accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in around three seconds. The sequential manual transmission with six forward gears, which is standard for all DTM vehicles, is located together with the differential in the rear ( transaxle design) on the driven rear axle. All wheels are individually suspended on double wishbones. The brake system with brake discs made of carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide ceramic is also the same in all DTM vehicles. Just like the other DTM vehicles since the 2013 season , the car is equipped with a Drag Reduction System (DRS).

As of the 2014 season, the DTM vehicles were no longer allowed to be further developed for reasons of cost savings. During the 2015 season, however, it became clear that the BMW M4 DTM was lagging behind the competition. Therefore, BMW was allowed to start the 2016 season with a wider rear wing and less weight, which was particularly criticized after Marco Wittmann won the driver's title .

The model for the 2017 season shows numerous changes, especially in the area of aerodynamics. The bumper on the front of the vehicle has a completely new shape. In addition, the rear and the rear wing have been redesigned. Until now, the rear wing consisted of only one profile and folded down completely when the DRS was triggered. The wing of the new BMW M4 DTM now consists of two profiles, the upper one of which folds up when the DRS is actuated. The setting range for the system is up to 40 degrees in 2017. In addition, ventilation channels were used on the rear wheel arches for the first time.

From the 2019 season onwards, the racing car will be powered by a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of two liters and a turbocharger . Thanks to the charging process, the BMW P48 achieves an output of around 456 kW (620 hp) despite the number of cylinders and displacement being halved compared to the previous engine.

Teams and drivers

In the 2014 DTM season , four teams competed with the M4 DTM. Timo Glock and António Félix da Costa compete for the BMW Team MTEK . For the BMW Team RBM started Augusto Farfus and Joey Hand , for the BMW Team Schnitzer Bruno Spengler and Martin Tomczyk and for the BMW Team RMG Marco Wittmann and Maxime Martin . In the first year BMW was able to win the drivers and the team championship with Marco Wittmann and the RMG team.

In 2015 Tom Blomqvist took over the cockpit from Joey Hand. Spengler and Félix da Costa also swapped teams. BMW managed to win the manufacturers' championship this year.

In 2016 , BMW competed with the same drivers as in 2015. Farfus, Glock and Martin switched teams. Farfus went from RBM to MTEK, Glock from MTEK to RMG and Martin from RMG to RBM. In the third year, Marco Wittmann won his second driver title.
