Theater work

In 2008 and 2009 the cabaret folk piece " Kottan determined : Rabengasse 3a" was created with the collaboration of Jan Zenker , based on the ORF television film "Hartlgasse 16a" (1976, screenplay: Helmut Zenker, director: Peter Patzak ). The premiere took place on April 15, 2009 in the Rabenhof Theater in Vienna . Under the direction of director Thomas Gratzer played u. a. Reinhard Nowak (as Kottan), Rudi Roubinek , Doris Schretzmayer , Dany Sigel and Roman Gregory . The majority of the reviews were positive, and the play was also a great success with the public: between April 2009 and March 2010, 44 performances were given, which were attended by around 13,000 people. A recording of “Rabengasse 3a” was released on DVD in November 2009, and on January 1, 2010, Puls 4 was broadcast for the first time on TV. On February 20, 2012, the piece was performed outside of Austria for the first time, namely at Trinity College (Dublin) . On the basis of the play, a radio play by "Rabengasse 3a" was subsequently created , in which the stage cast was supplemented by Christoph Grissemann as narrator.

In the course of 2010 the play “Kassbach” was developed (again with the assistance of Jan Zenker). Helmut Zenker's novel “Kassbach or The General Interest in Guinea Pig” (1974) served as a template. It was no coincidence that the play addressed the problems of neofascism and racism on the occasion of the Vienna state election campaign at the time. The premiere was, again at the Rabenhof Theater, on September 8th, 2010. Anatole Sternberg had taken over the direction. a. Hans Piesbergen (as Kassbach) and Gerald Votava . The opinions of the critics differed, the audience obviously couldn't do too much with the production, which is rather untypical for the Rabenhof Theater: From September to December 2010 there were 15 performances.

On November 17, 2016, Zenker's latest piece, “Kottan Determined - The Puppet Musical”, premiered as another Rabenhof production. Christian Dolezal took on the leading role of Major Kottan, directed by Thomas Gratzer . All other roles were performed by doll artists Nikolaus Habjan and Manuela Linshalm using snap-mouth dolls . When choosing music, u. a. made use of Austropop classics, especially by Kottan's Kapelle and Johann K. , the musical direction was with Kyrre Kvam. The production was realized as a co-production with the United Theaters of Bozen and the St. Pölten “Theater im Hof” and is therefore to be performed in January 2017 and December 2016 in the South Tyrolean and Lower Austrian provincial capitals.

Theoretical and journalistic work

Zenker, a columnist for the KPÖ- related weekly newspaper “ Volksstimme ” from 1998–2001 , has been present for years with journalistic articles, political essays and scientific contributions in various print and online media in the German-speaking area and is also a regular speaker. These texts, which z. Some of them have also been translated into other languages (including English, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Turkish and Persian), are all written from a socialist and communist , ideological point of view from a Marxist point of view. This also corresponds to Zenker's political activities: At a young age he was active in the Socialist Youth (SJÖ) close to the SPÖ and, alongside Andreas Babler, one of the heads of the Stamokap movement in the SJÖ, since October 2013 he has been deputy chairman of the then newly founded party of Work of Austria (PdA), in which he is considered an authoritative ideologist. Zenker has also published several non-fiction books, especially on the subject of imperialism and fascism , and has contributed to various anthologies. In the course of dealing with the current right-wing extremism, Zenker was able to prove to the National People's Party in April 2009 that it had copied most of its party program verbatim from a training program of the National Socialist SS , which contributed to a conviction under the National Socialist Prohibition Act in March 2012 .

Others

Since February 2012, the Wiener Bezirksblatt has published a weekly “Kottan Determined” comic strip , for which Zenker provides ideas and texts and Reinhard Trinkler provides the images. In the run-up to the exhibition “All right, Commissioner? Knatterton, Kottan, Emil and other detectives ”, which took place from April to November 2014 at the Krems Caricature Museum , Zenker's non-fiction book on the literary, cinematic and graphic history of the Kottan figure was published with the title“ Inspector is there ”.

Zenker has a son and a daughter. He currently lives with his partner, their daughter and their son from a previous relationship in Lower Austria.
