The caricature museum

The Krems Caricature Museum is the only Austrian museum for satirical art and is primarily dedicated to political caricature , humorous drawing, comics and illustration. It is located in Krems-Stein ( Lower Austria ) - in the middle of the Krems art mile - in the immediate vicinity of the Krems art gallery and the Lower Austria regional gallery .

Gottfried Gusenbauer has been director of the Krems Caricature Museum since 2012 .

History and architecture

The building was built according to the plans of the architect and caricaturist Gustav Peichl and officially opened on September 29, 2001 after almost a year of construction with the exhibition "All caricature - The drawn 20th century". In this exhibition, for the first time in Austria, the museum showed a cross-section of the most important international original graphics from the areas of caricature , pictorial satire and humor drawings of the 20th century.

The architectural design of the museum with a continuous glass front on the ground floor signals openness and transparency. The Caricature Museum Krems sees itself as a European competence center for the art of drawing and pictorial literature and networks with international artists, museums and exhibition houses.

The building was renovated at the beginning of 2017.

collection

The state of Lower Austria , with the collaboration of the Krems Caricature Museum, has been working specifically on building a collection of caricatures, cartoons , critical graphics and illustrations since 2001 .

The focus is on European caricature since 1900, with the work of contemporary cartoonists being of particular importance. In this way, the history of the caricature of the last 400 years is to be proven and documented using significant works. In addition to the largest collection of cartoons by Manfred Deix and works by Gustav Peichl, a significant part of Erich Sokol's estate was acquired in 2004. In 2007 the Fotter collection was added. Significant complexes of works by Gerhard Haderer - including the 2002 series “The Life of Jesus” - are in the possession of the collection, which now includes several thousand original graphics. It forms an important basis for the exhibitions at the Krems Caricature Museum. Works from the collection are also presented in cooperation projects in other international exhibition venues and museums.

SOKOL award for digital caricature, critical drawing and satire

More and more artists around the world are working in digital technology. In addition to traditional techniques such as pencil, ink or acrylic, caricatures and cartoons are also drawn by computer, digitally colored and sometimes published digitally. Front pages for Rolling Stone, Billboard, Time Magazine, The New Yorker and many other magazines are largely designed with digitally produced caricatures. Above all, the Internet and here the social media channels are used to distribute the caricatured statements and reach a large number of readers and consumers far beyond print. The Sokol Prize for Digital Caricature, Critical Art of Drawing and Satire, SOKOL for short, is intended to take this artistic development into account with an innovative and future-oriented prize and to further promote this trend. In cooperation with the Erich Sokol Privatstiftung Mödling and the Caricature Museum Krems, the state of Lower Austria awards the SOKOL - Prize for digital caricature, critical drawing and satire for outstanding achievements in the field of digital drawing every five years, for the first time in 2018. The Caricature Museum Krems is in cooperation act with the Lower Austrian state collections as a competence and communication center, network platform, hub and presentation location.
