architecture

The art collections of the State of Lower Austria used to be housed in the State Museum of Lower Austria . After the establishment of the House of History there , the state's art gallery was relocated to Krems-Stein.

After an EU-wide competition, the design by the architects Marte.Marte from Vorarlberg was unanimously accepted and the Linz construction company Dywidag was commissioned by the state of Lower Austria as the client to build the State Gallery of Lower Austria. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 5, 2016, with construction expected to end in the first half of 2019. The topping-out ceremony took place on March 14, 2018.

During the excavation work for the new museum building, construction workers came across important archaeological finds: a clay vase, a wooden paddle and dozens of wooden pillars for a bank reinforcement that suggest a port facility. The finds were scientifically documented by the archaeological excavation company ARDIG and then recovered in order to date and secure them more precisely. The clay vase can be seen in the House of History in the Museum Niederösterreich .

From March 1 to 3, 2019, the museum was open to the public for the first time and various events and guided tours took place as part of a pre-opening . The official opening ceremony ( Grand Opening ) took place on May 25th in the Steiner Minoritenkirche . It was also broadcast on television via ORF (nationwide).

In April 2020, the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich was recognized as the “best construction project in Austria made of ready-mixed concrete”.
