Life

The Greek pub in Vienna

Franz Hauer grew up as the son of a postman in poor circumstances in Weissenkirchen in the Wachau. After taking over in 1897, he achieved prosperity with a restaurant, the Greeksbeisl in Vienna , and from then on devoted himself to collecting contemporary art. Hauer became one of the most important collectors of the works of Albin Egger-Lienz , Egon Schiele , Oskar Kokoschka , Karl Sterrer , Anton Faistauer and many other artists.

In June 1914, at the age of 47, he died of appendicitis.
In the years after his death, the collection was largely sold; it is now in numerous important museums and private collections in Europe and the USA. Four years after his death, on March 20, 1918, the collection was auctioned at the Dorotheum in Vienna .

His son Leopold Hauer (1896–1984) worked as a painter. Important works in the collection were inherited from granddaughter Christa Hauer-Fruhmann and are now in the Lower Austrian state collections.
