Leopold Hauer was born on July 15, 1896 in Vienna as the son of the art collector and Greek innkeeper Franz Hauer .

Between 1918 and 1924 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Josef Jungwirth and Karl Sterrer . In 1927 a first solo exhibition followed in the Neue Galerie Vienna (with Otto Kallir- Nirenstein). Arthur Roessler wrote in his essay in Austrian Art in 1927 about Leopold Hauer: “At last someone again who is not just a painter, who is an artist as a painter. A creative artist of instinct and intelligence, one who does not produce 'decorate your home' pictures. One who presents himself to us as a talented and single artist, without an immediate predecessor who showed the way. He is not a naturalist, not a porter, he is a reshaper, he translates his impressions. And he is already doing this today with so much art that the viewer of his pictures can experience it both as a sensually captivating stimulus and as a pure spiritual pleasure. "

Leopold Hauer had been a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus since 1928 and was artistic director of the Künstlerhaus cinema between 1949 and 1966. In 1950 it was presented for the first time in a solo exhibition at the Künstlerhaus Vienna . In 1960, together with his daughter Christa Hauer-Fruhmann and son-in-law Johann Fruhmann, he founded the gallery in the Greek pub. In Peter Baum's opinion, Leopold Hauer's late work deserves particular attention: “It is not an exaggeration to see that Leopold Hauer has succeeded in expressing his artistic concerns in a particularly convincing way, especially in recent years. That he managed to go beyond the conditions of handicraft ability and painterly diligence, which he took for granted, to abstract formulations which, through the choice and implementation of the subjects, attest to the binding nature of the simple and thus mark out a late work that, thanks to his own effort and vitality, regeneration and further development, binding insight , Radiates honesty and spiritual freshness. "

Hauer died on November 2, 1984 in Lengenfeld (Lower Austria) . In 2009 a large retrospective was dedicated to him in the Leopold Museum . Rudolf Leopold wrote in the foreword to the Leopold Hauer monograph (2009): “The world of Leopold Hauer conveys a sense of authenticity, calm and contemplation, which in today's overheated, tormented world seems like a nostalgic feeling. Even during his lifetime Leopold Hauer was not ignored and was often positively mentioned by the press. His work deserves a new evaluation that illuminates his extensive oeuvre in relation to current issues. "
