The men's 5000 meter run at the 1982 European Athletics Championships was held on September 8 and 11, 1982 in the Olympic Stadium in Athens .
European champion was the German runner Thomas Wessinghage , who was third in the European Championship in 1974 over 1500 meters . Werner Schildhauer from the GDR won silver , five days earlier also over 10,000 meters in second place. Bronze went to the British world record holder David Moorcroft .
