Course of competition

With 24 participants in the 5000 meter run , no preliminary runs were necessary, so all athletes were sent out on the track together. Although the competition was very close to the race over 1500 meters - the final over the middle distance had taken place the day before, Jakob and Henrik, two of the three Ingebrigtsen brothers, were also back on the long distance . The British Mo Farah , who has been extremely successful in recent years, was not among the participants . Apart from Farah, in the past almost all African runners were found in the top international events. Here the Europeans were among themselves and had the chance to present themselves with good performances. The outcome of the race was very open.

Right from the start, the team ran at a steady pace with 1000 meter sections of just over 2:40 minutes. The leadership work changed again and again, the field stayed together for a long time, fourteen runners formed the top group at the 4,000 meter mark without any major gaps. At this point the race got a lot faster. The only 17-year-old Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who had won the 1500 meters the day before, now pushed the pace and the field fell apart. Only Henrik Ingebrigtsen, fourth on the middle distance, French Morhad Amdouni, Italian Yemaneberhan Crippa, Briton Marc Scott, Turk Polat Kemboi Arıkan and Rinas Achmadejew, who started as an athlete under a neutral flag, were initially only able to follow. Jakob Ingebrigtsen didn’t give up and took the last lap together with his brother Henrik. In the end, Henrik Ingebrigtsen also had to let go in the target curve, Jakob Ingebrigtsen ran safely towards his second European title. Henrik Ingebrigtsen won the silver medal after his fourth place on this track at the last European Championships . Bronze went to Morhad Amdouni, who had become European champion over 10,000 meters four days earlier . The gaps had increased significantly on the last lap, but the runners who had been in the leading group of seven two laps before the end made the further placements among themselves. Yemaneberhan Crippa, bronze medalist over 10,000 meters, was fourth ahead of Marc Scott, Polat Kemboi Arıkan and Rinas Achmadejew. The Swiss Julien Wanders took eighth place.
