Andreas Vojta (born June 9, 1989 ) is an Austrian middle-distance runner from Gerasdorf near Vienna . The Austrian athlete of the year 2010 and eleventh at the European Championships in Barcelona celebrated his greatest successes over 1500 meters .
Athletic career
Andreas Vojta started his running career at LCC Vienna. There he was first trained by Renata Sitek and then rose to the training group of the sports director Wilhelm Lilge. This is followed by Vojta, after his separation from LCC Vienna, to his new club team2012.at.
In 2009 Vojta achieved his first national title in the general class. The 1500 meters became his specialty over the next few years.
In 2010 Vojta established itself at the national top in middle distance running. On July 3, 2010 he set his then best time over 1500 meters at the Leon Buyle Memorial in Oordegem (Belgium) and in 3: 40.79 minutes he met the limit for the European Championships in Barcelona . There Vojta reached the final, in which he finished eleventh.
In the 2011 indoor season, Vojta initially failed at the Indoor Classic Vienna just under the standard of 3: 43.50 min for the 2011 European Indoor Championships in Paris. At the following Sparkassen Cup in Stuttgart, however, he met the limit with 3: 41.85 minutes. At the European Indoor Championships Vojta was eliminated in the preliminary run and took 21st place overall.
On July 2, Vojta made another big step forward in his career: At the meeting in Uden (Netherlands), the Gerasdorfer ran a new personal best with 3: 37.82 minutes and undercut the limit for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. At the same time he qualified for the 2011 World Championships in Daegu. Two weeks later he only missed a medal at the U23 European Championships in Ostrava. In the final run on July 17, 2011, after a tactical race with an extremely fast final lap, he finished fourth, just 33 hundredths of a second behind winner Florian Carvalho (FRA).
Olympic Games 2012
In 2012 Vojta focused entirely on the London Olympics. At the Indoor Classic Vienna on January 31st, he improved his indoor best performance by 2.86 seconds to 3: 38.99 minutes and was at the top of the European rankings and third in the world best of the year. At the European Championships in Helsinki Vojta ran the fastest time of all participants in the semifinals, but in the final he had to be content with tenth place due to a fall 200 meters from the finish.
At the Olympic Games in London, he could not fulfill his dream of reaching the semi-finals. For him, it was the end of the line.
However, Vojta made positive headlines in other respects: With his statements, he made a significant contribution to the fact that the Moroccan Amine Laalou was convicted after targeted doping tests and was not allowed to compete in the Olympic Games.
After London, Vojta still shone over the 1000 meters: within a few days he improved his record twice and at the Gugl meeting was only 14 hundredths of a second above Robert Nemeth's 30-year-old ÖLV record with a time of 2: 18.34 minutes .
On February 21, 2013 Vojta started at the top-filled XL Gala in Stockholm, where it improved the Austrian indoor record over 1000 m by approx. Three seconds. At the European Indoor Championships in Sweden's Gothenburg Vojta only reached the 14th place after a fall in the flow. In May 2013 he won the Steffl Tower Run in Vienna. It took him 1: 24.77 minutes for the 343 steps and 67 meters in altitude in the narrow south tower of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and was thus able to set a new record time.
In the summer, the run-up to the open-air world championships in Moscow was just as terminus as the 2014 indoor world championships in Sopot. and also at the European Championships in 2014 , where he was also disqualified because of an opponent's handicap.
In 2017 he became national champion over 1500 and 5000 m. In 2018 he competed in the 5000 m for the first time at the European Open Air Championships in Berlin . There he finished 20th in 13: 42.75 minutes. In 2018 he was also national champion over 10,000 m on the track.
In 2019 he finished 25th at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow over the 3000 m with 8: 09.72 minutes. In April 2020, the 30-year-old covered the 10-kilometer distance in 28:28 minutes in a training run. This would put Vojta in second place in the all-time Austrian best list behind Günther Weidlinger (28:10 min).
Andreas Vojta is a son of the Mayor of Gerasdorf Alexander Vojta.
