Robert Nemeth (athlete)

Robert Nemeth (born June 5, 1958 in Hofors , Sweden ; † December 15, 2015 in Mauerbach , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian medium and long-distance runner . He took part in various national and international competitions and won a total of 28 national championship titles in the general class from 800 to 10,000 meters.

Athletic career

If he was eliminated at the European Athletics Championships in 1978 over 1500 meters , he made it to the semi-finals at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow that followed. At the European Indoor Championships in Grenoble in 1981 , he finished sixth over the distance of 3000 meters (2820 m in real terms).

In 1982 he was fourth at the European Indoor Championships in Milan over 3000 meters and at the European Championships in Athens over 1500 meters.

At the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 he reached the semi-finals. He was sixth at the European Indoor Championships in 1984 in Gothenburg over 1500 meters and in 1985 in Piraeus over 3000 meters.

He was Austrian champion three times over 800 meters (1978, 1981, 1982), five times over 1500 meters (1981–1985), twice over 10,000 meters (1986, 1987) and four times in cross-country skiing on the short distance (1981, 1982, 1984, 1987) ). In the hall he won three national titles over 800 meters (1980–1982) and 1500 meters (1981, 1982, 1985).

His Austrian records over 1 mile, 2000 meters and the indoor record over 1500 meters are still unbroken today.

Robert Nemeth died on December 15, 2015 after a serious illness at the age of 57 in Mauerbach.
