Soufiane Bouchikhi (born March 22, 1990 in Sint-Niklaas ) is a Belgian athlete of Moroccan origin who competes in long-distance runs .

Athletic career

Soufiane Bouchikhi grew up in the city of Antwerp . In 2009 he took part in the Belgian U18 championships, where he finished third over 3000 meters. In the same year he competed over 10,000 meters at the U20 European Championships in Novi Sad, where he finished seventh. By spring 2011 he improved his time over the 5000 meters, on which he has increasingly focused since then, to 13: 54.37 min. In the summer he went over this distance at the U23 European Championships in Ostrava, where he finished 16th. In the course of 2012 he improved his 5000 meter time by more than 20 seconds and his 10,000 meter time by more than a minute.

In 2014 Bouchikhi competed for the first time in an international championship for adults at the European Championships in Zurich. There he could not build on the performances already shown in the course of the season in the final of the 5000 meters and finished in 15th place. A year later, competitions in the half marathon started for the first time, including the Universiade in Gwangju, which finished fourth. A few days earlier he already reached fifth place over 10,000 meters. At the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam, he finished seventh in 29: 04.74 minutes. There he started the half marathon just two days later, where he finished 28th. In 2017 Bouchikhi narrowly missed the final of the 15 best at the World Championships in London over 5000 meters and ended up in 16th place.

In the summer of 2018, he first competed over 10,000 meters at the European Championships in Berlin. In the race, he finished sixth. Four days later he was tenth over the 5000 meters. In March 2019, he took part in the New York Marathon over half the distance, in which he set his best performance of 1: 02.59 h. At the World Championships in Doha, he finished 14th over the 10,000 meters after 28: 15.43 minutes. In December he finished seventh at the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon.
