José Mojica Marins alias Zé do Caixã (2010)

José Mojica Marins (born March 13, 1936 in São Paulo ; † February 19, 2020 there ) was a Brazilian filmmaker, actor, composer, screenwriter and TV presenter. Marins was known for his role as Zé do Caixão , English Coffin Joe , which he played in a number of horror films. This figure has become a pop culture icon and cult figure. Coffin Joe's popularity in Brazil has resulted in the character being dubbed "Brazil's National Boogeyman" and "Brazil's Freddy Krueger".

Life

Marins was born to Spanish parents on a farm in São Paulo. He became interested in filmmaking at an early age. His father ran a local cinema and the family lived above it. From an early age, Marins made short films, which he made with his parents' camera. These short films were shown in churches and amusement parks.

In 1953 he founded the Cia. Cinematográfica Atlas (Atlas Film Company). He bought an abandoned synagogue which he converted into a film studio and academy, where he gave acting classes and trained technicians to finance and make his films.

He made his feature film debut with the film "Adventurer's Fate" (1958). In 1964 he made the film "At Midnight I Take Your Soul", which is considered Brazil's first horror film and in which he breathed life into his character Coffin Joe for the first time. A second part followed with “This Night I Possess Your Corpse” (1967) and a belated conclusion of the trilogy with “Embodiment of Evil” (2008). With these films, Marina cemented his reputation as a pioneer of Brazilian horror cinema, who specialized in graphically violent horror films.

Marins died on February 19, 2020 at the age of 83 in São Paulo of complications from pneumonia .
