Yemaneberhan "Yeman" Crippa , (born October 15, 1996 in the province of Wällo , Ethiopia ) is an Italian athlete of Ethiopian origin who specializes in long-distance and cross-country runs. He is multiple cross-European champion in the youth field and also bronze winner of the men's European championships in 2018.

Early years

Yemaneberhan Crippa was born in the north-eastern Ethiopian province of Wällo. He lost both parents in the Eritrea-Ethiopia War and spent his early years in an orphanage with his older brothers Nekagenet and Kelemu. There they were adopted by the Italian couple Roberto and Luisa Crippa, who took all three siblings into their home in Montagne, a small town in the Judiciary in Trentino . The couple took in a total of nine children from the East African country. His older brothers are also track and field athletes.

Athletic career

Crippa has been participating in international competitions since 2012. He started at the European Cross Country Championships , which he finished in 32nd place in the junior race. A year later he also took part in the Cross Country World Championships , where he finished in 38th place in the same age category.

At the Junior World Championships in Eugene in 2014 , he ran over 1500 m in seventh place. At the European Cross Country Championships in the same year, he won his first major sporting success on an international level. He confirmed the victory a year later at the 2015 European Championships in Hyères, France . Also in 2015 he ran in third place over 5000 meters at the U20 European Championships .

At the European Championships in 2016 he took part in a major adult event for the first time. There he ran over 5000 meters compared to the previous year when he won the European Youth Championships around a minute faster and ended up in eighth place in the final. In 2017 he won gold over 5000 meters at the U23 European Championships . Before that he ran in seventh place over 3000 meters at the European Indoor Championships for adults.

In 2018 he achieved his greatest sporting success to date with the bronze medal over 10,000 meters at the European Championships . Four days later, he also competed over his usual distance of 5000 meters. There he finished fourth in the end. At the World Championships in Doha, he initially competed over 5000 m and was able to reach the final. In the final, he finished eleventh. A week later he also competed in the 10,000 m. There he finished eighth and not only improved his best time to 27: 10.76 min by more than half a minute, but also set the new Italian record over this distance. In December he won the bronze medal at the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon

Crippa is currently the holder of several Italian youth records over various distances.
