Julien Wanders (born March 18, 1996 in Geneva ) is a Swiss - French long-distance runner . He represents Switzerland internationally and holds the European records in the 10 km road race and over the half marathon distance.

Career

Julien Wanders starts for the athletics club Stade Genève . On December 18, 2016, Wanders set a new Swiss record over 10 km of road with a time of 28:22 minutes in the 10 km road race in Houilles . He undercut Markus Ryffel's old record from 1986 by three seconds. On March 19, 2017, Wanders made his debut over the half marathon distance at the Stramilano . With a time of 1:01:43 he pulverized Viktor Röthlin's old U23 record by almost three and a half minutes and missed Tadesse Abraham's existing Swiss record by just 59 seconds. In the elite race, he finished fourth, leaving running greats like the then European marathon champion Daniele Meucci behind.

On October 8, 2017, in Durban , he improved his own Swiss record over 10 km by ten seconds and finished the race behind the two Ugandans Joshua Cheptegei and Stephen Kissa . However, this record lasted less than three months. On December 31 of the same year, he set the fastest time at the Corrida de Houilles by a further 11 seconds, winning the race ahead of Ethiopian Jemal Yimer Mekonnen . With this personal best, the dual citizen pulverized not only the Swiss, but also the French record. The French record was not recognized in retrospect because Wanders had already represented Switzerland internationally as a junior. However, due to a rule change that does not apply retrospectively, dual citizens like Wanders can register in French record lists from April 1, 2018, even if they represent another country internationally.

Its now high level of performance turned Wanders and 2018 demonstrate: the Mitja Marató de Barcelona , he completed on 11 February 2018 in second in 1:00:09 hours and thus beat the Swiss half-marathon record of Tadesse Abraham by 33 seconds. During this time he would have broken the French record again. A little more than a month later he finally finished eighth at the World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia with a time of 1:01:03 h. At the European Athletics Championships in Berlin , Wanders competed over 5000 and 10,000 m, which he finished in eighth and seventh place respectively.

On October 14, 2018, Wanders improved Mo Farah's eight-year-old European record over 10 km by 12 seconds to 27:32 minutes at the City Surf Run in Durban and finished the run in second behind Joshua Cheptegei , who set a new one with 27:16 minutes Set course record. On December 30, 2018, he again improved his record as the winner of the Corrida de Houilles to 27:25 min.

On February 8, 2019, Wanders set another European record at the RAK half marathon in Ra's al- Khaimah with 59:13 minutes. He was only the 5th European to run the half-marathon distance for less than an hour. 10 days later he won a 5 km road race in Monaco in 13:29 minutes despite a temporary illness . During this time, he also set the first official world record over the 5 km distance, as the IAAF has only held this record since 2019 and faster times achieved in previous years were therefore not counted. This lasted until November 19, 2019. His European record was broken by 11 seconds on February 16, 2020 by Jimmy Gressier .

In autumn 2019, Wanders took part in its first World Athletics Championships in Doha . However, these were disappointing for the then 23-year-old after he had to deal with an illness in preparation for the World Cup. In the 5000 m race , Wanders was eliminated in 25th place with a time of 13: 38.95 minutes in advance. He gave up the race over 10,000 m .

On December 1, 2019, he won the Course de l'Escalade in Geneva for the third time in a row . Just one week later, Wanders finished fourth at the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon and missed bronze by just four seconds.

At the beginning of the 2020 season in Valencia he improved his own European record over 10 km of road to 27:13 minutes.

Julien Wanders lives and trains mostly in his adopted home of Iten in the highlands of Kenya .
