Jemal Yimer Mekonnen ( Amharic ጀማል ይመር, born September 11, 1996 in Wällo ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner . In 2018 he became African champion over 10,000 meters in the title fights in Asaba. He also won the bronze medal over 10,000 m at the 2019 African Games .

Early years

Jemal Yimer comes from the south of Wällo Province in central Ethiopia, where he was born into a family of farmers. His mother raised him alone at first, as his father served in the military. In school he began to play athletics under the supervision of the trainer Habtemariam Ayehu , with whose help he fought his way to the top of the Ethiopian running team.

Athletic career

Yimer has been taking part in international athletics competitions since 2016. In addition to road and cross-country runs, he competes over the 10,000-meter distance. At the African Championships in Durban, he finished fourth in the latter discipline in a time of 28: 08.92 minutes. In spring 2017 he took part in the World Cross Country Championships in Kampala. There he also took fourth place in the adult race over 10 kilometers. In July he set his current best time of 26: 54.39 minutes at a meeting in Hengelo, the Netherlands, and one month later he also took part in the World Championships in London. There he ran a time of 26: 56.11 minutes, which meant fifth place at the finish.

In 2018, Yimer celebrated his greatest sporting success to date with his victory at the African Championships . In October he competed in the half marathon in Valencia, Spain. Yimer ran a time of 58:33 minutes. This is currently, as of August 2020, the fourth fastest time ever over this route worldwide. With a time of 58:33 min, he finished 15 seconds behind Abraham Kiptum , who set a world record, in second place and at the same time set a national record over this distance. However, Kiptum's result was canceled due to doping in the following year. In spring 2019, Yimer took part in the Africa Games in Rabat. There he won the bronze medal in 27: 59.02 minutes.

Personal best

Others

In March 2019, Yimer competed in a half marathon in Manama that was to receive a $ 100,000 award, making it one of the highest-paying races on the track and field calendar. Yimer already looked like the winner in the finish sprint, but mistook a signal bridge decorated with balloons, around 50 meters from the finish, for the finish line. He was already celebrating his triumph when he realized his mistake, whereby his compatriot Abadi Hadis secured the victory. For second place he still received $ 25,000.
