Stephen Kissa (born December 1, 1995 ) is a Ugandan athlete who specializes in long-distance running.

Life

Stephen Kissa was born the oldest of five children and grew up in the village of Sosho , near the town of Kapchorwa . He first came into contact with athletics during his school days. After graduating from school, he joined a police sports club and also got a job as a prison guard. Today he trains at the NNRT Training Camp in Kapchorwa, together with world record holder Joshua Cheptegei .

Kissa is married and has two sons. With the income from his sporting achievements, he was able to buy some land in his home country on which he farms and ranched animals. Kissa counts the multiple Olympic and world champions Mo Farah and Stephen Kiprotich to his sporting role models. He has been a fan of Liverpool FC since childhood . A diagonal scar runs from the corner of his mouth to his chin, which was made to him as an eight-year-old by the horn of a cattle.

Athletic career

Stephen Kissa first took part in the national championships in 2013, at that time still over 3000 meters obstacle , in which he finished fifth. In the following year races over 5000 and 10,000 meters were added. He also finished 15th in the African Cross Country Championships. In 2015 he became the Ugandan runner-up over 5000 meters. In 2017 he improved his best time over this distance to 13: 13.00 min and thus also fulfilled the norm for the World Championships in London and. Before that, he competed at the World Championships in his home country in March , making his debut on an international level for Uganda. In the race over 10 kilometers, however, he did not get past 52nd place. At the world championships over 5000 meters in October, things did not go optimally either, as Kissa suffered from the consequences of a malaria infection and thus lagged more than 15 seconds behind his best time in the run-up and could not qualify for the final. In July 2018 in Lausanne he ran a time of 1:10.93 minutes on his parade route, setting his personal best. In 2019 Kissa represented his home country at the Africa Games in Rabat. He finished ninth in the finish. At the end of September he also competed over the 5000 meters at the World Championships in Doha. In the run-up he came to a time of 13: 27.36 minutes, with which he missed the finals in tenth place. In February 2020, Kissa made his debut over the half-marathon distance in Valencia, where he was counted among the favorites in advance. He completed the distance in exactly one hour and was able to confirm his role as a favorite in second place. In March 2019, he ran a time of 27:13 minutes in the 10-kilometer road run in Lareda. He is the holder of the national record in this discipline.
