Viktor Röthlin (born October 14, 1974 in Kerns ) is a former Swiss long-distance runner . In 2010 he was European champion in the marathon , won the silver medal at the 2006 European championships and the bronze medal at the 2007 world championships. Röthlin held the Swiss marathon record from 2001 to 2016, most recently with his best time of 2:07:23 h, which he achieved in the 2008 Tokyo Marathon .

Career

After the unsatisfactory 19th place in the 10,000 meter run at the 1998 European Championships in Budapest, Röthlin concentrated on the longer distances. The 1999 Hamburg marathon in 2:13:36 h and the 2000 Rotterdam marathon in 2:12:53 h was followed by an appearance at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, where he finished 36th in the marathon.

In 2001 he set a Swiss record in eighth place in the Berlin Marathon with 2:10:54 h. At the marathon of the European Championships in Munich in 2002 he came in 16th and at the World Championships in 2003 in Paris / Saint-Denis on 14th place.

In 2004 he won the Zurich Marathon , in which he had already finished second last year, with a new Swiss record in 2:09:56 h. In 2005 he finished fourth in the Zurich Marathon, won the Greifensee run and finished seventh in the New York City Marathon .

In 2006, he first improved his personal record in the half marathon to 1:02:16 h in the Stramilano when he was fifth and then won the silver medal at the European Championships in Gothenburg behind Olympic champion Stefano Baldini (ITA) and ahead of Julio Rey (ESP). He also won the overall ranking of the Post Cup .

In 2007 he won the Zurich Marathon with his third Swiss record over this distance in 2:08:20 hours. At the 2007 World Championships marathon in Osaka, which took place at 7 a.m. despite the early start time, with great heat and high humidity, he was in fifth place after 40 kilometers, but still had enough strength to make an irresistible final sprint on the last two kilometers overtaking two runners and crossing the finish line on the bronze course.

In 2008 he won the Tokyo Marathon and again set a Swiss record with 2:07:23 h . At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he won an Olympic diploma in the marathon with sixth place as the fastest non-African runner. With his time of 2:10:35 h he lost 4:03 minutes to the winner, Samuel Kamau Wanjiru . In December, Röthlin also won the Zurich New Year's Eve run .

In March 2009 he suffered two pulmonary embolisms in quick succession . In May, he was able to carefully start running again. At the end of July he took part in a run again for the first time, placing himself fifth at the Aegeriseelauf as the second-best Swiss. He had to cancel a planned start over the half marathon distance on the Greifensee run in September due to an inflammation in his right foot. At the end of November, Röthlin had an operation on his heel.

Röthlin only announced on July 18, 2010 after a 10-kilometer competition that he would start the marathon at the European Championships in Barcelona . In this competition, Röthlin was able to outstrip his last competitors after 28 kilometers and was convincing European champion with over two minutes ahead of the Spaniard José Manuel Martínez . On September 18, Röthlin became the Swiss marathon champion on the road for the first time : At the Greifensee run, he took the half marathon title in a sprint ahead of Christian Belz . On November 7th, only 14 weeks after his European Championship marathon, Röthlin started the New York City Marathon. The preparation time turned out to be too short, after a good 20 kilometers he got out of the race.

In December, Röthlin announced that he would start the London Marathon on April 17, 2011 . In preparation for this he ran the Kerzerslauf, the Stramilano half marathon and became Swiss champion over 10 kilometers on the road. At the London Marathon, he finished eleventh, which was unsatisfactory for him. He was third and best Swiss at the Greifensee run, and he finished eleventh at the Portugal half marathon in Lisbon .

In 2014 he ended his career.

Viktor Röthlin is 1.72 m tall and weighs 60 kg. The trained electrical draftsman and qualified physiotherapist starts for the STV Alpnach. In 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 he was voted Swiss Athlete of the Year . When he was voted Swiss Sportsman of the Year 2007, he was only beaten by tennis player Roger Federer .
