Life

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he represented the Soviet Union for the first time at a major event. After 2: 13: 33.4 hours he finished seventh, two and a half minutes behind the Belgian Karel Lismont in third place. In 1977 Mossejew won his first Soviet championship title in the 10,000 meter run . At the Universiade in Sofia he won over 10,000 meters and took 3rd place over 5000 meters. At the European Athletics Cup in 1977 he was third over 10,000 meters. At the end of the year he finished second in the Fukuoka Marathon behind Bill Rodgers in 2:11:57 h, which was also a personal record and the second fastest time of the year.

The following year he did not take part in the Soviet championships, but concentrated entirely on the European Athletics Championships in Prague in 1978 . Together with his teammate Nikolai Pensin , he stayed in the top group from the start. At the memorial in Lidice , the turning point of the route, ten runners were in the lead. Mossejew were the first in the stadium and Pensin were the first to reach the stadium, and Mossejew prevailed with just one and a half seconds in 2: 11: 57.5 hours. Behind them, Karel Lismont and Olympic champion Waldemar Cierpinski, two runners who were more likely to win, and three other athletes within a minute, crossed the finish line. Like Sergei Popow and Ivan Filin 20 years earlier , the Soviet runners had a double victory.

1979 Mossejew became the first Soviet champion in the marathon. In the championship over 10,000 meters he was second behind Aleksandras Antipovas . The race was won by the Ethiopian Miruts Yifter , who like the Belgians around Lismont used the opportunity of the open Soviet championship to test the Moscow conditions a year before the Olympic Games. Mossejew competed in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow on the marathon distance. Behind Cierpinski and the Dutchman Gerard Nijboer , three Soviet runners crossed the finish line in positions 3 to 5, with Mossejew surprisingly only fifth behind the Kyrgyz Satymkul Jumanasarow and the Belarusian Uladsimir Kotau in 2:12:14 h . Mossejew won his last Soviet championship title in 1982 on the marathon distance.

In addition to his career as a track and road runner, Mossejew was also successful in cross-country skiing , with the Soviet team he won bronze at the World Championships in 1977 and 1979, in 1978 the team finished fourth and 1980 fifth. His best individual placement was 7th at the 1980 World Cross Country Championships .

The 1.80 m tall Mossejew weighed 64 kg during his competition time.
