Ivan Ilyich Filin
Ivan Ilyich Filin ( Russian Иван Ильич Филин , English transcription Ivan Filin ; born March 10, 1926 in Kimovsk ) is a former Russian marathon runner who started for the Soviet Union .
In 1952 he came in 13th place in the Soviet Championship in 2:32:16 h. In 1954 he was fifth in the Soviet Championship in 2:31:40 h and won bronze in the European Athletics Championships in Bern in 2:25:27 h.
The following year he was Soviet champion in 2:23:10 h and won the World Festival of Youth and Students in 2:28:42 h.
In 1956 he defended his Soviet title with his personal best of 2:20:06 h and was seventh at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 2:30:37 h.
In 1957 he was the Soviet runner-up in 2:21:39 h and won the Košice marathon in 2:23:58 h. Behind Sergei Popow , who defended his title, he was again Soviet runner-up in 1958 in 2:21:16 h; at the European Championships in Stockholm he was also second in 2:20:51 h behind Popow, who set a world record with 2:15:18 h.
