Kimowsk ( Russian Кимовск ) is a city in Tula Oblast ( Russia ) with 28,485 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Central Russian Plate , at its transition to the Oka-Don plain about 75 km southeast of the oblast capital Tula .

Kimovsk is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

The place arose during the Second World War , when the active exploitation of the brown coal reserves of the Moscow coal basin began. Several coal pits were built on the land cultivated by the KIM kolkhoz as well as a housing estate for miners near the central settlement of the Mikhailovsky kolkhoz . KIM is the Russian abbreviation for Communist Youth International ( Kommunistitscheski Internazional Molodjoschi ), the youth section of the Communist International .

In 1948 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement under the current name, derived from the name of the kolkhoz, and on March 31, 1952 the city charter.

Culture and sights

The city has a local museum.

In the settlement and former city of Jepifan of Kimovsk Raion there is a historical and ethnographic museum .

Economy and Infrastructure

After lignite mining, which was once the dominant branch of the economy, came to a standstill in the 1990s, there is now a radio-electronic plant, as well as businesses in the food and construction industries.

The city lies on the railway line Vyazma - Tula - Uslowaya - Ryashsk, opened in 1874 (route kilometers 374).

Kimovsk by the regional road leads R114 Kaschira -Uslowaja as taught herein, the R145 to Kurkino branches.
