Sowetsk ( Russian Советск ) is a small town in Tula Oblast ( Russia ) with 7536 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 40 km south of the oblast capital Tula on the left bank of the Upa , a right tributary of the Oka, which flows into the Volga, which is dammed up here to form the Shchokino dam .

Sovetsk is located in Shchokino Raion , about 18 kilometers southeast of the Rajon administrative center.

history

From the end of the 1940s, in connection with the construction of the Shchokino thermal power station, a workers' settlement was built on the banks of the Upa, which was dammed up as a cooling water reservoir for the power station. On July 1, 1950, the power station went into operation and in 1954 the settlement was granted town charter.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Shchokino thermal power plant ( Schchokinskaya GRES ) of the regional energy company TGK-4 with an installed capacity of 400  megawatts is located near Sovetsk .

The city also has smaller plants for additional boiler equipment and pipes, insulation materials, and a furniture and textile factory.

The closest train station is Schitowo about ten kilometers west of Sovetsk on the Moscow- Tula- Kursk - Kharkiv route . North of the city also the industrial railway runs (only freight) Schtschokino- Lipki - kireyevsk -Dedilowo (at uzlovaya ) over.
