It is located on the Waschana River , a right tributary of the Oka , around 35 kilometers north of the oblast capital Tula and 160 km south of Moscow . history
The city of Yasnogorsk is mentioned for the first time in written documents from the 15th century, at that time as a settlement called Laptewo , which was probably named after a local lord with the family name Laptew. In 1867 Laptewo gained some importance in the construction of the railway line from Moscow to Tula and further south to Kursk ; a train station was built here, which subsequently also served as a transshipment point for timber transport. In the 1880s, the merchant Ippolit Golowin founded a factory here to manufacture agricultural machinery. It was not until 1958, however, that Laptewo officially became a town and in 1965 it was finally given the “melodious” name of Jasnogorsk - literally translated as “cheerful town”.
