Chekalin ( Russian Чекалин ), formerly Lichwin ( Лихвин ) is a small town in Rajon kireyevsk the Tula Oblast in Russia . The city lies on the left bank of the Oka River .
The population is 994 (as of October 14, 2010). This makes Chekalin the smallest city in Russia.
history
The city was founded in 1565 under the name Lichwin.
During the Second World War , the city was occupied by the German Wehrmacht from October 22 to December 27, 1941 . In 1944, Lichwin was renamed Chekalin in honor of the Soviet partisan Alexander Chekalin , who was hanged here on November 6, 1941 at the age of 16.
