Ivan Petrovich Trutnev

Ivan Trutnev ( Russian Иван Петрович Трутнев ., Scientific transliteration Ivan Petrovich Trutnev * 1827 in Lichwin in the province Kaluga ; † February 4 jul. / 17th February  1912 greg. In Vilnius ) one was Russian painter and founder of the Vilna school of painting at the Vilnius Art Academy .

Born and raised in a peasant family, he entered the art school of Count Stroganov in Moscow in 1845 . He finished this in 1849 with the qualification as a drawing teacher. In the period from 1851 to 1858 he continued his education at the Petersburg Art Academy . There he studied with Professor Bogdan Pawlowitsch Willewalde .

In the years 1852 to 1854 he received silver and gold medals for his pictures The Wounded Soldier and the French at Fire (Больной солдат и французы у огня) and Playing the Blind (Игра в жмурки) in student exhibitions for his pictures . In 1855 he was awarded a gold medal for his painting The Farmer Blesses His Son Going to War (Крестьянин благословляет своего сына в ополчение).

After completing his training at the St. Petersburg Art Academy, he was given the right to continue his education abroad because of his merits. In the period from 1860 to 1865 he traveled to several European cities, including Vienna , Paris , Dresden and Antwerp .

After his return to Russia he first taught drawing and calligraphy at the Gymnasium in Vitebsk . In 1866 he met Ivan Petrovich Kornilov , who wanted to found a painting school in Vilnius in order to promote the development of an independent local art that was to differ from Russian. Trutnew followed this call and taught painting and drawing at various schools in Vilnius and also ran this drawing school.

Trutnew became a permanent participant in the traveling exhibitions initiated by the Peredwischniki . In 1868 he was made an honorary member.

In Vilnius he painted cityscapes and genre pictures devoted to local themes such as the Lithuanian tavern (Литовская корчма), the fair in Kazimirovsk (Казимировская ярмарка), the flea market in Vilna (Тол .Вилы нол. He also painted pictures with a church-historical background as well as pictures of official events of Alexander II's visit to the local history museum in Vilnius (Визит Александра II в Музее древностей в Вильне) as well as portraits of official dignitaries of his time.

Another central area of ​​his work was icon painting . He created icons for churches in the cities of the western governorates of the Russian Empire of his time, as happened in Minsk , Hrodna , Chernihiv , Lublin and Warsaw .

In addition, he founded an artist school, which he took over the direction. It became the leading artistic training institution in Lithuania from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. This school granted access without distinction of nationality, origin or denomination. The number of students grew steadily - from 100 in 1866 to over 4,000 at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to Trutnew, Vasily Grjasnow , Józef Bałzukiewicz , Tadas Daugirdas , Stanislaw Jarozki , Iwan Rybakow , Sergei Juschanin and Nikolai Sergejew-Korobow taught at this school .

The first training at the school was given to painters, graphic artists, sculptors, photographers of various styles and orientations. Among the students were Jehudo Epstein , Vytautas Kairiūkštis , Bolesław Bałzukiewicz , Konstantin Gurski , Vladas Didžiokas , Juozas Zikaras , Lasar Segall , Chaim Soutine and many others.

In addition to his artistic and educational activities, Trutnew was also active in society. Among other things, he was a founding member of the Lithuanian Artists' Circle and initiated exhibitions of the work of his students.

In the last years of his life he stopped painting because of his poor health. He died in 1912 at the age of 85.
