Bolesław Bałzukiewicz

Bolesław Bałzukiewicz ( Russian Болеслав Балзукевич; Lithuanian Boleslovas Balzukevičius ; * February 12, 1879 , † February 13, 1935 in Vilnius ) was a Polish sculptor and professor at the University of Stefan Batori in Vilnius.

Life

He grew up in Vilnius as the son of an engraver together with his brother Józef Bałzukiewicz , who was also to become an artist. Between 1903 and 1907 and from 1919 he lived in Vilnius. He received his first artistic training at the local drawing school from Ivan Trutnew .

He supported Antoni Wiwulski in casting the monument to the Grünwalder Battle near Krakow (1910). He also gained fame as the creator of allegorical figures and the monument to the composer Stanisław Moniuszko . He also created the monument to the famous banker and patron Józef Montwiłł . Many of the monuments and busts of well-known personalities he created were commissioned works by well-to-do and high-ranking clients that were placed in their private gardens and parks.

Bolesław Bałzukiewicz also created realistic group sculptures such as The Emigrants (Эмигранты), The Orphans (Сироты), The War (Война), busts of Adam Mickiewicz , Joachim Lelewel and others, as well as memorial plaques (Antoni Wiwulski and others). His work also included tombs , among others for his brother Józef Bałzukiewicz.

In 1919 he accepted a professorship at the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius. Here he held the chair for sculpture. He carried out this activity until 1935 . He died in Vilnius that same year.
