Jehudo Epstein

Jehudo Meier Epstein (born July 6, 1870 in Sluzk , Minsk Gouvernement , Russia ; † November 16, 1945 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) was a Jewish painter who came from Belarus , but who spent most of his life in Austria .

Life

Epstein received his first drawing lessons in Vilnius from Ivan Petrovich Trutnew . Due to his origins, he was not allowed to study at the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg . He then went to Vienna without recommendations and without knowledge of the German language , where he studied at the Vienna Academy under August Eisenmenger from 1888 to 1894 . From 1923 Epstein had a professorship at the academy.

He received an award for the picture Polish Jews playing chess , as well as the Michael Beer Prize for Saul and David . A travel grant enabled him to go on a study trip to Rome . Further trips took him through several European countries and also to Palestine.

During the First World War , Epstein was a member of the art group in the Austro-Hungarian war press quarter .

In 1920 a comprehensive exhibition of his pictures took place in the Künstlerhaus in Vienna , on the occasion of which he received the Reichl Prize and was honored with the title of Professor.

In 1935 , Jehudo Epstein emigrated to South Africa.

His urn was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery in the Israelite Department.

In the first decades of the 20th century, Jehudo Epstein had great success with his realistic images of everyday Jewish life and popular life, which he idealized. In addition, he also created biblical scenes, genre pictures , portraits of personalities in society and landscapes , mostly in a relatively dark palette. He was regarded as one of the most important Jewish painters during his lifetime.
