Tadas Daugirdas ( Russian Тадас Даугирдас; Lithuanian Tadas Daugirdas ; born March 10, 1852 in Torbin in the Novgorod governorate ; † November 1, 1919 in Kaunas ) was a Lithuanian painter , archaeologist and local historian.

origin

Coming from a long -established Lithuanian boyar family, he attended the drawing school of Ivan Trutnew in Vilnius , where he was later to teach himself. In the period from 1870 to 1872 he continued his education in Saint Petersburg , which he completed in Munich by 1876 .

activity

From 1907 he lived in Kaunas. Here he participated in the organization of the first exhibition of Lithuanian artists, which took place in Vilnius in 1907. Archaeological excavations took up a significant part of his work. In addition, he was engaged in the registration and cataloging of cultural monuments, he examined cemeteries , old burial sites, barrows throughout Lithuania. During this time he worked as a curator in the Kaunas City Museum ; from 1909 he assumed the office of director of this museum. He bequeathed his archaeological collection, objects of national customs and works of national applied art to the museum. He ran this museum until 1919.

In the period from 1910 to 1914, he again devoted himself to organizing Lithuanian art exhibitions in Kaunas. He worked on the publication of periodicals / magazines such as Draugija (Драугия), Viltis , Lietuva (Летува), Vienybe (Венибе) and others

In 1919, Tadas Daugirdas was elected chairman of the State Archaeological Commission. In the same year he died in Kaunas. Here is a street named after him.

Daugirdas created paintings with symbolic and allegorical content such as At Dawn (На заре), Snowstorm (Метель) or The Court (Двор). He also created decorations and costumes for theater performances for the Lithuanian company Daina (Дайна) and directed. In addition, since 1917 he was a member of the commission responsible for drafting the Lithuanian national flag.
