Plawsk ( Russian Плавск ) is a small town with 16,165 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and the center of the raion of the same name in Tula Oblast in Russia , Central Federal District .
geography
The city is located on the Central Russian Plate on both banks of the Plawa River (Russian Плава), about 60 km southwest of the regional capital Tula . The closest cities, each around 35 km from Plawsk, are Sovetsk and Shchokino . The landscape in and around the city is mostly hilly .
history
Plawsk was first mentioned as a village in 1540 - at that time under the name Sergijewskoje - and was a village shaped by trade in the 19th century, especially after it was connected to the railway network. The town has existed as the town of Plawsk since 1926, although its town charter was revoked from 1935 to 1949.
(2172) Plavsk , an asteroid of the main outer belt, was named after the city.
The Chernobyl disaster (April 1986) hit Plawsk among the localities on Russian territory relatively hard, as the rain fell on the city from radioactive clouds, which contaminated the soil and water with radioactive cesium ( 137 Cs).

economy
Since Plawsk is a rather provincial town, there are only a few industrial companies here. The most important is the separators -Werk smychka (russ. Смычка).
traffic
The city can be reached from Moscow both by car and by train . On the one hand, Plawsk is on the M2 trunk road ; on the other hand, an important railway line runs through the town, connecting the capital Moscow with the southern part of Russia (including Kursk and Belgorod ). For this reason there is continuous traffic on this route, but not all trains stop in town. However, Plawsk is well connected to Tula and other cities with regional trains . In addition to the small train station, the city has a bus station .
