final

August 12, 2018, 7:30 p.m. CEST

Actually there could only be one winner in a hammer throw . Anita Włodarczyk from Poland dominated almost all of the major international championships in the recent past, usually with a clear lead. She was two-time Olympic champion - 2012 / 2016 , three times world champion - 2009 / 2015 / 2017 - and three-time European champion - 2012 / 2014 / 2016 .

With Malwina Kopron, the vice world champion in 2016, and Joanna Fiodorow, the third place in the European Championship in 2014, two more Polish women with medal chances were at the start. Other contenders for top positions were the French World Cup third in 2015 Alexandra Tavernier and the British European Championship fourth in 2016 Sophie Hitchon.

There were only two throwers with an attempt beyond the 70-meter mark in the first round. Tavernier took the lead with 74.78 m, followed by Moldovan Zalina Petrivskaia with 70.98 m. In lap two, Włodarczyk's hammer landed at 76.50 m, which put her in front. Joanna Fiodorow rose to 71.41 m and was third. In the third round, the level of this competition increased further. Włodarczyk achieved 77.82 m, Fiodorow consolidated her third place with 74.00 m. Kopron reached 72.20 m, that was position four. Petrivskaia also improved again with a throw to 71.80 m, but fell back to sixth place, because Hanna Skydan from Azerbaijan achieved 71.92 m. The German Kathrin Klaas conquered seventh place with 70.66 m and the eighth-placed Hitchon now exceeded the 70-meter mark with 70.52 m.

The first final round of the eight best throwers did not result in any changes in positions. But Włodarczyk now achieved her best distance of this competition with 78.52 m. With this she improved her own EM record from 2014 by eighteen centimeters. Not much happened in the last two laps. Klaas reached 71.50 m with her fifth litter, Skydan reached 72.10 m with her last attempt. Anita Włodarczyk became European champion for the fourth time in a row. Alexandra Tavernier won silver, Joanna Fiodorow won bronze. Malwina Kopron came fourth, making three Polish women among the top four. Hanna Skydan was fifth ahead of Zalina Petrivskaia. Kathrin Klaas achieved seventh place ahead of Sophie Hitchon in her last competition at a major international championship.
