Course of the competition

One of the top favorites here was the Spaniard Miguel Ángel López. He was the 2015 world champion and 2014 European champion and thus also the defending champion, because this competition was not held at the 2016 European Athletics Championships . His Spanish compatriots Diego García Carrera and Álvaro Martín were also rated highly in any case. The German Christopher Linke started with good prospects as World Cup fifth in 2017 and European Championship fifth in 2014.

The walkers contested this competition for a long time at a steady, not too fast pace. In the two-kilometer sections of just over eight minutes, however, there was no strolling. The field and a large management group stayed together for a long time. Nobody tried to set themselves apart from their competitors at an early stage. This group only gradually became smaller. Nineteen walkers were still together in front at half of the course, at twelve kilometer it was seventeen and at fourteen kilometer there were still ten athletes together.

But now it got faster. With the two Spaniards Martín and García, Wassili Misinow, who started under a neutral flag, the Italian Massimo Stano and the British Tom Bosworth, five walkers were able to break away. Ten seconds behind followed the two Germans Nils Brembach and Hagen Pohle together with the Pole Artur Brzozowski, who soon after received his third red card and was thus disqualified. Then Bosworth fell back too, and a little later Stano. Two kilometers from the finish there was a group of three with Martín, García and Misinow in front. Stano followed eight seconds behind, Bosworth was 21 seconds behind, the closest pursuers were Brembach and Pohle, 31 seconds behind. The strongest final section went to Álvaro Martín, who was eight seconds ahead of Diego García Carrera European champion. Vasily Misinov won the bronze medal just two more seconds behind. Fourth was Massimo Stano, who in the end came within a second of Misinow. Nils Brembach was fifth ahead of Miguel Ángel López, who came up again at the end. Tom Bosworth followed in seventh place, Hagen Pohle came eighth.
