The Olof-Palme-Platz is a square in the Berlin district of Tiergarten in the Mitte district . It represents the intersection of Kurfürstenstrasse , Budapester Strasse and Nürnberger Strasse .

History, location

The green area forms the entrance area to the aquarium and the zoological garden (entrance to the elephant gate ). On March 1, 1991, the previously unnamed square was dedicated to the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme , who was murdered in 1986 . With the ammonite fountain and benches designed by the Berlin sculptor Volker Bartsch , it represents a small recreation point at this - here very busy - location. Originally, Budapester Strasse ran directly parallel to the border of the zoo with the elephant gate and the aquarium (not yet restored at the time). before being panned in the 1980s to form today's square. The street area belonged to Kurfürstendamm until 1925 , before it was renamed Budapester Straße on this section .

Ornamental fountain

The 2.50 × 11 × 17 meter ammonite fountain was built between 1985 and 1987. The spiral-shaped fountain, a geometric construction copied from nature, refers to the name- giving ammonite , a cephalopod that became extinct over 70 million years ago . The fountain consists of 165 slates (with a total weight of around 100  tons ) that were broken 160 meters underground in the Sauerland , as well as 13 bronze sculptures that are reminiscent of ancient fossils. The fountain system was inaugurated on May 29, 1987 by Queen Elizabeth II of England .
