course

Kurfürstenstrasse begins in the east at Dennewitzstrasse and ends in the west at Olof-Palme-Platz in front of the Berlin Aquarium . Among other things, it crosses Potsdamer Strasse , which is part of Bundesstrasse 1 . The Kurfürstenstraße underground station on the U1 line is located there . In 2013, the east end of the street was extended beyond Dennewitzstraße as direct access for pedestrians and cyclists to Westpark. The Westpark was opened on May 31, 2013 as the second part of the park at Gleisdreieck .

history

The street was built towards the end of the 17th century and until its current name in 1863 was called Mühlenstraße , also Mühlenweg . It has had its current name since 1863 after the term elector . This is derived from 'Kur', the Old High German term 'churi', which means something like 'choice'. The street section of the former Teltower Strasse between Potsdamer and Dennewitzstrasse was also named Kurfürstenstrasse on March 19, 1869, so that the entire stretch of road from the zoological garden to the railway area was called that. A small part of the street was in Charlottenburg until February 5, 1965 . This section between Nürnberger Strasse and Budapester Strasse (Tiergarten) was included in Budapester Strasse. The name Kurfürstenstrasse was thus dropped for Charlottenburg. Between 1962 and 1977, individual plots of land adjacent to Kurfürstenstrasse were added. At the time it was named, the street was already part of Berlin .

memorial

The impressionist painter Ernst Oppler had his apartment in the city center at Kurfürstenstrasse 125a. During the National Socialist era, the SA's riding and driving inspectorate was located in Kurfürstenstrasse 114 . From 1941, the so-called “ Eichmannreferat ” was located at Kurfürstenstrasse 115/116 , an office of the Reich Security Main Office , in which the deportation of European Jews to the extermination camps was organized. The building, built around 1910, was previously owned by a charity, the Jewish Brothers Association. Today a bus stop redesigned as a memorial commemorates the history of the house that was demolished in 1961.

In particular, the section between Potsdamer and Karl-Heinrich-Ulrichs-Strasse (formerly Einestrasse ) has been a well-known street in the city since the 1960s . In 2013, there were discussions about blackout periods and the establishment of a restricted area. In 2014 the number of prostitutes was estimated at 300. Die Welt reported in 2015: “A study by the Technical University of Berlin showed that the prostitutes were predominantly women from Central and Eastern Europe , age: 18 to 35 years. Two thirds are addicted to heroin or cocaine . And almost all of them can show a tax number at the tax office. "

The head office of the " Café Einstein " is located near Karl-Heinrich-Ulrichs-Straße at Kurfürstenstraße 58 .

The Scottish artist Douglas Gordon works and lives in the Tiergarten industrial estate at Kurfürstenstrasse 13/14 .
