The men's 20 km walk at the 1971 European Athletics Championships was held on August 10, 1971 in the streets of Helsinki .

The European champion was the Olympic third in 1968 and the third in the European Championship in 1969 Nikolai Smaga . He won in front of the GDR goalkeeper Gerhard Sperling . Bronze went to the British defending champion Paul Nihill .
