The men's marathon at the 1971 European Athletics Championships took place on August 15, 1971 in Helsinki , Finland .

The Belgian Karel Lismont won the race with a new championship record in 2: 13: 18.8 hours. Briton Trevor Wright was runner-up in front of his compatriot Ron Hill .

With his time of 2: 13: 18.8 h, Karel Lismont improved Sergei Popov's European championship record by 1: 58.2 minutes as the new European champion .
