İsmail Akçay

İsmail Akçay (born July 9, 1942 in Balıkesir ) is a former Turkish marathon runner .

In 1966 he came in 16th place at the European Athletics Championships in Budapest and won the Balkan Games . In 1967 he finished second in the Las Vegas Marathon and fourth in the Athens Marathon . He won silver at the Mediterranean Games . In 1968 he won again at the Balkan Games. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he came in fourth in 2:25:19 h, one and a half minutes behind bronze medalist Mike Ryan . At the end of the season he finished fourth in the Fukuoka Marathon with his personal best of 2:13:44 h . In 1969 he finished second in Las Vegas and third in Athens. At the European Championships in Athens , he finished fifth. In 1970 he won in Athens, and in 1971 a 16th place at the European Championships in Helsinki was followed by another victory at the Balkan Games and bronze at the Mediterranean Games. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he did not reach the goal. In 1973 he shared the victory at the Balkan Games with his compatriot Hüseyin Aktaş .
