Yuri Pavlovich Velikorodnych

Yuri Pawlowitsch Velikorodnych ( Russian Юрий Павлович Великородных , English transcription Yuriy Velikorodnykh ; born February 18, 1942 in Alexandrowsk , Molotov Oblast ) is a former Soviet marathon runner .

On October 12, 1968, he won a marathon in Chișinău in 2:19:29 h, the fastest time on Moldovan soil to date . The following year he won the Dębno marathon in 2:21:18 and came in 15th place at the European Athletics Championships in Athens . In 1970 he was seventh in the Košice marathon and twelfth in the Fukuoka marathon .

In 1971 he was Soviet champion in 2:19:11 and finished 19th at the European Championships in Helsinki , and in 1972 he qualified as Soviet runner-up for the Olympic Games in Munich , where he came in 14th.

He was also national runner-up the following year. In 1974 he again won the championship title in 2:15:28, but did not finish at the European Championships in Rome .

In 1976 he set his personal best as third in the Dębno Marathon with 2:12:59 and finished 24th at the Olympic Games in Montreal .

Yuri Velikorodnych studied mining at the Perm Polytechnic Institute (today Perm National Polytechnic Research University ). He started for Burewestnik Perm and was trained by Viktor Starjuk. From 1983 to 1986 he was the head coach of the Soviet marathon team and led the women's team to win silver at the 1985 IAAF World Cup marathon . Today he is vice president of the Perm Region Athletics Federation.
