The men's marathon at the 2014 European Athletics Championships took place in Zurich , Switzerland , on August 17, 2014 .

The Italian Daniele Meucci won the race in 2:11:08 h. Vice European champion was Yared Shegumo from Poland, ahead of Russian Alexei Reunkow .

For the team classification, the so-called Marathon Cup, the times of the three best runners per nation were added up. However, the evaluation was not part of the official medal table. The team from Russia won ahead of France and Switzerland.

route

The competition took place on a circuit in downtown Zurich. One lap was ten kilometers, at the end there was a short finish loop.

The start and finish were at Bürkliplatz . The first part of the route was flat along the western shore of Lake Zurich and back in a loop almost to the starting point. Then it went through the old town of Zurich on Bahnhofstrasse , via Paradeplatz and Münsterhof to the Münsterbrücke . The route down the Limmatquai led to the Central . There began an ascent via Seilergraben and Hirschengraben as well as Leonhardstrasse to the Polyterrasse at ETH . Past the university , we went along Rämistrasse via Heimplatz (Pfauen) to Bellevue . From there, another loop led along the east bank to the Zürichhorn , where the route partly took narrower paths off the road through the park and back to the starting point of the loop. The route finally reached the starting point via the Quaibrücke.

There were 176 meters of altitude to master. Most of the circuit was flat. The incline to be mastered four times was rather short and with a maximum of 8.8% incline in the street Auf der Mauer was very steep. Under these circumstances top times were not possible.

Aid stations were set up on the Limmatquai and on the Zürichhorn. Water and sponges were distributed on General-Guisan-Quai and on the Polyterrasse . There were showers at Mythenquai and Sechseläutenplatz .
