The men's marathon at the 1974 European Athletics Championships took place on September 8, 1974 in Rome , Italy .

The Briton Ian Thompson won the race in 2:13:19 hours. Eckhard Lesse from the GDR was vice European champion ahead of the Belgian Gaston Roelants .
