The men's 50 km walk at the 1974 European Athletics Championships was held on the streets of Rome on September 7, 1974 .
The competition suffered somewhat from the cancellation of this discipline at the next 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . There were only nineteen participants, only eight nations were represented. However, this deletion remained an exception. From 1980 onwards, walking 50 km was again consistently part of the Olympic program.
The GDR walkers won two medals in this competition: gold and bronze. European champion was the Olympic champion from 1968 , European champion from 1969 and vice-European champion from 1971 Christoph Höhne . He won ahead of Otto Bartsch from the Soviet Union. Third place went to the Vice European Champion from 1969 and third place in the European Championship in 1971, Peter Selzer .
