The men's 20 km walk at the 1974 European Athletics Championships was held on September 3, 1974 in the streets of Rome .

European champion was the two-time Olympic champion ( 1960 / 1968 ) and two-time EM -Medaillengewinner ( 1962 Bronze / 1966 Silver) Volodymyr Holubnychy from the USSR. Second place went to the German Olympic champion from 1972 over 50 km walking, Bernd Kannenberg . Bronze went to the Briton Roger Mills.

There was no preliminary round, all 21 walkers went to the final together.

After two Olympic victories since 1960 and two EM medals since 1962, Volodymyr Holubnytschyj has now also become European champion
