The Kaiping light railway was a 5 km long light railway with a gauge of 600 mm near Kaiping (Tangshan) in China .

History and route

The German-style light railway connected the Kaiping station of the standard gauge Kaiping Tramway (s) with a military camp 5 km away. There were gradients of up to 1:18 (5.5%) on the route. It was built in September 1900 to supply an infantry battalion. Extensive earthworks and rock blasting were necessary during construction. The protection of the railway systems against downpours required special care. The superstructure and the equipment had to be brought from Shanghai and dismantled during transport.
