The men's 200-meter run at the 1974 European Athletics Championships was held on September 4 and 5, 1974 in the Olympic Stadium in Rome .
The European champion was the Italian Olympic third in the 200 meters from 1972 Pietro Mennea , who had already won silver over 100 meters here. He won in front of two German sprinters . Second place went to Manfred Ommer from Germany. Bronze went to Hans-Jürgen Bombach from the GDR.

Preliminary remark:
In these years there was a dichotomy in terms of best performances and records. Hand-stopped and electronically determined services were performed side by side. The official times were usually given in tenths of a second, which were rounded if electronic measurements were available. However, the record given in tenths of a second became less and less important.
