In contrast to the 100-meter run, the best runners of their time met in this race . Three athletes in particular were favored: the American Larry Black, the Jamaican Donald Quarrie and the Soviet 100-meter Olympic champion Valery Borsov. Quarrie sustained a hamstring injury and was unable to qualify for the finals. His time would come four years later.
Like over 100 meters, Borsow dominated the final race from the start and won with 19 hundredths of a second ahead of Larry Black, who was drawn on the unfavorable inner lane, but nevertheless won the silver medal. Third, somewhat surprisingly, was the 20-year-old Italian Pietro Mennea.
Valery Borsov was the first runner who did not come from the USA to win the Olympic double over 100 and 200 meters.
Valery Borsov won the first Soviet medal over 200 meters .
Pietro Mennea was the first Italian medalist in this discipline.
