The favorites were Yevgeny Arshanov from the USSR, European champion from 1971 , and David Wottle, USA, who was the dominant runner in the United States in the Olympic season, but suffered from a knee injury beforehand. Both runners were extremely strong and had the necessary speed for such a race.

In the final, the two Kenyans Robert Ouko and Mike Boit set the tone first. The 400-meter split was good with 52.3 seconds, but was not in the absolute top range. After the first lap it slowed a little, Arshanov took the lead after 500 meters. Until then, the top field was packed with six runners, only Franz-Josef Kemper stayed out of the battles for positions in seventh place. And Wottle was in last place on the first lap with a small gap to Kemper. Wottle worked his way forward past his fading opponents in the back straight. In the corner he was very close to the leading quartet and was able to overtake the Kenyans and Arshanov on the home straight. David Wottle was clearly the fastest runner in the last 200 meters and became Olympic champion. Yevgeny Arshanov won the silver medal and bronze went to Mike Boit. Robert Ouko - he finished fifth - had to let Franz-Josef Kemper pass with the last steps.

Dave Wottle, whose trademark was a golf cap that he also wore during competitions, caused some irritation at the award ceremony. He kept his headgear on while the hymn was playing. Afterwards he apologized to his compatriots. He said he forgot he was wearing the cap.

Yevgeny Arshanov managed to win the first Soviet medal over 800 meters .
