Comment on the records: In these years, electronic timekeeping was already used at many events. However, the records were usually still held in tenths of a second. They were a mixture of hand-timed and rounded electronically determined times. Since the times measured by hand timing turned out to be one to two tenths of a second better due to the reaction times of the referees, they also began to keep separate, purely electronically determined record overviews.
The first electronically guided world record in the 100-meter run was Jim Hines ' time of 9.95 s in his Olympic victory in 1968 .

Intermediate runs
Date: August 31, 1972, from 4.15 p.m.
From the total of five intermediate runs, the first three from each run qualified directly for the semi-finals as well as the fastest of the runners who were not directly qualified. Due to misinformation from the coach, the three US-Americans Rey Robinson, Eddie Hart and Robert Taylor, who had qualified for the intermediate round, were in their quarters in the Olympic village at the beginning of the competition and followed the competitions on television. Only Robert Taylor made it to his intermediate run in time.

In this race, a duel between the two Americans Rey Robinson and Eddie Hart, who had set the world record as the world's best , with the Soviet sprinter Valery Borsov was expected. Borsow was unbeaten for two years, had won the European championship title last season and was often referred to as a 'retort sprinter'. But this argument did not take place: the US team missed the deadline for the intermediate runs. By the time the mistake was noticed, it was too late. Only the third US sprinter, Robert Taylor, got into the stadium just in time and qualified for the finals.
The final took place in Munich the evening before, which had already cooled down a bit, with a slight headwind. Borsow was in front from the start, could not be denied this lead and was clearly superior in 10.14 s Olympic champion. A tenth of a second behind him, the remaining American Robert Taylor won the silver medal. The Jamaican Lennox Miller came in bronze with another tenth of a second behind. He had won silver in 1968 .
