final
Date: September 3, 1972, 3:30 p.m.
The top favorite was the Soviet Olympic champion from 1968 and world record holder Jānis Lūsis from Latvia, u. a. also European champions of the last four European championships. The West German thrower Klaus Wolfermann had set a new world record for the year with 90.68 m shortly before the games in Munich and was considered the Latvian’s main competitor.
The final turned into a duel between the two favored throwers. The bronze medalist was more than five and a half meters behind in the end. Lūsis took the lead in the first lap with 88.88 m, followed by Wolfermann - 86.68 m - and the Finn Hannu Siitonen - 84.32 m, who should not succeed in any valid attempt in the following period. The US athlete Bill Schmidt passed the Finn in the second round with 84.92 m. The next two rounds brought no changes in the top positions. In the fifth attempt, Wolfermann achieved the new Olympic record distance of 90.48 m with his best litter . Lūsi's last attempt also clearly exceeded the 90-meter mark and the audience waited with great excitement for the result of the distance measurement. At 90.46 m, the result was just two centimeters below Wolfermann's result. With that the medals were distributed. Klaus Wolfermann became Olympic champion, the silver medal went to Jānis Lūsis and Bill Schmidt won the bronze medal with his litter from round two.
Klaus Wolfermann was the first German Olympic champion in the javelin throw - Gerhard Stöck had won the gold medal in 1936 as a participant for what was then undivided Germany.
