final

Date: September 9, 1972, 2:30 p.m.

The audience saw a very exciting final. The Pole Władysław Komar hit his ball on the first attempt on the new Olympic record of 21.18 m. The GDR athlete Hans-Peter Gies came to 21.14 m, followed by his teammate Hartmut Briesenick and the US pusher Allan Feuerbach. In the second attempt, Gies added 21.00 m, in the third another 21.01 m. Also in the third round Briesenick came to 21.02 m before he brought the ball to 21.14 m on lap four. That was the same distance as that of his compatriot Gies, but Briesenick's second best attempt was an inch further. However, that was only enough for Briesenick to get a bronze medal and Gies to take fourth place, because the American George Woods also managed 21.17 m in the fourth attempt, which was only one centimeter behind the leading Komar. Until the end nothing changed in the order.

The fifth Feuerbach and his compatriot Brian Oldfield in sixth place , who competed with a new joint technique, a forerunner of the rotary joint technique , remained above the Olympic record that had been valid until then.
In Shot Put Men Wladyslaw Komar was the first Polish Olympic champion and was also the first Polish medalist in this discipline.
